The city is gripped by plague, fear, and religious zeal, and Bento's growing habit of questioning sacred truths makes him a danger to both Church and synagogue. Amid this turmoil, he meets Rembrandt van Rijn, the once-celebrated painter now sliding into debt and disgrace.
